At Chesapeake Contracting Group, the Captains of Chesapeake series highlights the leaders who drive our mission forward. Our latest feature focuses on Micah Boyce, Vice President of Pre-Construction, whose journey into the construction industry is rooted in hard work, hands-on experience, and a passion for problem-solving.

Micah’s story begins on his family’s small farm in West-Central Indiana, where he developed a passion for building as a child. “I helped my dad build much of our house when I was 12 and 13,” Micah recalls. “That was an impactful experience for me. I shadowed any tradesman that was helping with the construction. I pulled electric wire, hung siding and drywall, and learned about framing and trim work. Measuring, cutting, and building came natural to me.”

This early exposure laid the foundation for his future. “In college, I maintained a job as a carpenter with a single-family home builder that specialized in large additions and renovations. It was a great experience as I was exposed to all aspects of the process and was able to learn from many talented and wonderful people.” These experiences helped Micah build a well-rounded skill set and a solid understanding of how to complete projects from start to finish.

Micah’s career took a major step forward when he landed an internship in Annapolis, MD while still in school. “I had never heard much of Annapolis, but I thought it would be exciting to see and experience something new, so I took it.” After a summer spent working in the field and estimating department, the company sent Micah home with a desktop computer, cell phone, and blue books, allowing him to continue working remotely in between classes. This opportunity marked the beginning of his path toward pre-construction, where he would ultimately thrive.

Micah had the opportunity to hold several positions in the early days of his career, including Project Manager. “As a project manager, I could successfully contribute to the company’s bottom line on a handful of jobs each year, but as an estimator, I had the opportunity to contribute on every project,” Micah explains. “That is the main reason why I continued to invest my career in pre-construction. I was good at it, and I felt I could benefit the organization more.”

Micah’s passion for pre-construction goes beyond the numbers. He sees the role as a critical way to bring value to the client and ensure the project’s success from the earliest stages. “We utilize a layered approach for development and review through teamwork, providing multiple vantage points to the work to increase accuracy and consistency. We rely on our collective experience, and our trade partners, to ensure anticipated aspects and costs are captured, communicated, and managed throughout the pre-construction period,” he explains.

At Chesapeake, adding value to the client is not just about delivering a cost estimate—it’s about partnering with clients to find solutions early in the process. “We don’t just rely on historical pricing,” Micah says. “We strive to challenge designs and seek a better way to do things.” By proactively identifying opportunities to improve the project and reduce costs, Chesapeake ensures that clients are getting the most value for their investment.

Transparency and collaboration are key to Chesapeake’s approach from concept to completion. Micah emphasizes the importance of working closely with trade partners and clients to support open communication throughout the process. “We seek to bring solutions to the table as a partner of the project team,” he says. This collaborative mindset helps Chesapeake build lasting relationships with clients, ensuring that projects are completed with a high level of trust and shared success.

Micah’s leadership style is rooted in the core values of Chesapeake. He believes in challenging himself and others to constantly improve. “I enjoy the challenge to be better, and my goal is to lead others to find success in doing the same,” he says. For Micah, the core value that resonates most deeply is ‘Relentless.’ “Grind, how far can you push yourself, not allowing something else to get in your way,” he explains. It’s a philosophy that has guided his approach to both work and leadership.

Over the years, Micah has expanded his experience across a wide range of sectors, from retail to multi-family to mass timber construction. “There is no end to our learning in this industry, and I truly enjoy that,” he says. His dedication to continued growth and learning has helped Chesapeake stay at the forefront of industry trends and deliver innovative solutions to clients.

Outside of work, Micah values time with his family. “I enjoy spending time with my beautiful bride of more than 20 years and our three children. We love being involved in their athletics, fishing, crabbing, listening to music, and socializing with friends.”

For Micah, the most rewarding part of his role at Chesapeake is the opportunity to create, build, and lead. “I enjoy the opportunity. The opportunity to create, to build, to lead, and to improve. The relationships I’ve developed here are a tremendous reward for the effort I put in.”
