Syd Syed

After two decades at Chesapeake Contracting Group, being promoted to Vice President of Operations is more than a career milestone for Syd Syed, it’s a moment of reflection on a journey shaped by consistency, commitment, and a deep belief in people.

“When I joined Chesapeake 20 years ago, we were a much smaller organization,” he recalls. “I wasn’t thinking about titles or career paths. I was focused on doing good work, taking care of our clients, and supporting the team around me.”

That mindset, showing up every day, doing the right thing, and staying grounded, became the foundation for Syd’s Chesapeake story.

Growing with Chesapeake

Over the years, Syd has evolved alongside Chesapeake. From working on individual projects to leading large, multi-phase automotive projects, each step taught him something new about risk, relationships, leadership, and human nature.

But while reflecting on his career, Syd mentions it’s not just the projects that kept him at Chesapeake; it’s also the people. “The trust from ownership, the teamwork across departments, and the relationships we’ve built with clients mean everything to me,” he says.

To Syd, the promotion is not just a title change; it’s about stewardship. He explains, “This is a responsibility to protect our culture, raise the bar operationally, and develop the next generation of leaders so our clients continue to see us as trusted advisors, not just builders.”

A Career Built in the Automotive Sector

With more than 100 dealership projects completed, Syd has become one of the industry’s strongest automotive leaders. His passion for the market developed early on, beginning with one of Chesapeake’s longstanding clients, a regional automotive dealer group.

Over the years, Syd has been drawn to the pace, precision, and strong brand identity that define automotive projects. Dealerships are highly visible, customer-facing facilities where every detail matters, and he thrives in environments where design, functionality, and schedule are equally critical.

He also enjoys the challenge of coordinating the many moving parts, from service and showroom to parts and site logistics, while collaborating closely with manufacturers and dealer principals. What keeps him most energized, though, are the relationships he’s built. Guiding owners through the process, helping them avoid pitfalls, applying lessons learned, and improving the customer experience are what make each project feel personal and rewarding.

Delivering at a High Level Every Time

Automotive projects move fast. They’re brand‑driven, operationally sensitive, and often phased around active dealerships where sales and service can’t stop.

“To deliver successfully, you need deep brand knowledge, strong relationships, clear communication, and trade partners who understand this world,” he says.

For Syd, success comes down to preparation, field leadership, and a problem‑solving mindset that keeps everyone aligned with manufacturer standards and owner expectations.

A Leadership Style Rooted in Coaching

As Vice President of Operations, Syd leads not only projects but people, systems, and processes.

“My leadership style is coaching‑based,” he explains. “I focus on each team member’s strengths and how they can grow.”

Earlier in his career, he was task‑driven, focused on execution, details, and delivering exceptional product. Experience taught him that long‑term success depends on developing people.

“Today, I clearly communicate expectations, especially in the automotive sector, and then trust the team to take ownership… When the team succeeds, the projects succeed.”

The Core Value That Means the Most

Out of Chesapeake’s five Core Values, one rises above the rest for him: Relationships.

“Projects come and go. Markets shift. But relationships last,” he says. “Clients don’t just hire contractors; they hire people they trust.”

In his view, relationships are the backbone that supports every other value. When you genuinely care about people, you naturally act responsibly, protect your reputation, treat others with respect, and pursue excellence with intention.

And after 20 years, those relationships – built on trust, partnership, and shared success – continue to drive Syd every day.
