Meet Melissa Martin

Meet Melissa Martin- Accounting Specialist and this month's Hard Hat Hang-Up feature!

After working in the Early Childhood Education Industry for 12 years, Melissa decided it was time for a change of pace. Melissa wasn't a stranger to construction as her Dad worked in the industry as a brick-mason/foreman and even built her childhood home.

She joined CCG in 2019 as the Front Office Coordinator/Receptionist in the Baltimore County office. Melissa's hard work led her to being promoted into the accounting team. Melissa's advice for young women looking for a career change is "you never know unless you try! As someone who made an entirely unprecedented career-change, you can do anything you put your mind to, as long as you stay humble and are willing to improve, learn and are unafraid to ask questions."

1. What got you into the construction industry?
I joined the CCG Team in Jan. of 2019 as the Front Office Coordinator/ Receptionist in Reisterstown. I came from the Early Childhood Education Industry, where I was the Assistant Director of a School and had worked previously for 12 years. I was in desperate need of a change of pace. My dad was a brick-mason and foreman for the majority of my life so the construction industry was nothing new to me. My dad built the home I grew up in, and there are pictures of me as a toddler laying brick too!

2. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
My husband and I are expecting our first child in mid-September and lately my time has been consumed with preparing for his arrival. My hobbies otherwise include, Musical Theatre, baking and gardening. I have worked professionally in Musical Theatre on-and-off since 2013 at places like Toby’s Dinner Theatre, Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre in over 50 different shows and I even sang the National Anthem on ESPN for their First Ever, 3D broadcast.

3. What do you like most about being in Accounting?
I love the comradery and true sense of team. There has always been a culture of respect, understanding and educating.

4. What has been a rewarding/memorable moment in your career?
Thus far, being promoted into the Accounting Team has been a great accomplishment, I had minimal prior experience in this field and have been constantly learning from the others on my team since day one.

5. What’s your favorite thing about working at CCG?
By far, the best part is the people. There is a great team-culture, and reciprocated respect from the top down, that is truly unique to CCG.

6. Any advice for young women who are looking to make a career change?
My advise would be, you never know unless you try! As someone who made an entirely unprecedented career-change, you can do anything you put your mind to, and as long as you stay humble and are willing to improve, learn, and are unafraid to ask questions.
