Meet Drew Gibbons, Senior Project Engineer and this month’s Hard Hat Hang Up.

How did you get into the construction industry?

I’ve been interested in construction since a young age. I studied Civil Engineering at Penn State and started my career as a design engineer, where I spent about six years working on transportation, site civil, and utility projects. While working in design, I realized I wanted to be more involved in the day-to-day progress of construction and enjoy the hands-on experience of seeing work take shape in the field.

What do you like most about being a Senior Project Engineer?

I really enjoy that this role lets me have my hands in many different trades and be involved in both the field and office sides of the project. I get to collaborate closely with the subcontractors and the ownership team, and I enjoy working together with the team to find solutions for any issue that arises.

In your opinion, what skills are needed to a be a successful Senior Project Engineer?

Strong organization, communication, and attention to details are some essential skills to have. You should be able to anticipate issues as they arise and communicate clearly with the rest of your team. I think you also need to be open minded and should strive to learn something new every day.

What is your favorite thing about working at Chesapeake?

The people and culture. I joined Chesapeake earlier this year, and everyone has been extremely welcoming. I’m surrounded by a great team that has taught me so much in a short amount of time. The company has a strong culture of teamwork and really emphasizes the growth of individuals. Everyone is willing to help and share their knowledge.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and dog, playing chess, being active and spending time outdoors, whether it is playing tennis, pickleball, hiking, or running, and playing guitar in a band with some friends of mine.
