Meet Gilmar Montoya, Superintendent and this month’s Hard Hat Hang Up.

How did you get into the construction industry?

I started working in construction right after high school; first getting into dry wall with my dad who was my mentor in the beginning. After some time, we moved to a different company, and I started learning about framing and acoustical ceilings. Short after that I was given the opportunity to become a foreman with a drywall company where I worked for a few years. Then I met the superintendent for the company I used to work for, and he talked to the owner who gave me a chance to be an assistant superintendent. After a month of being with the company I got promoted to become a superintendent. I was with the company for 13yrs. But unfortunately, they went out of business. That’s when I came to work at Chesapeake.

What do you like most about being a Superintendent?

What I like the most is the different challenges and accomplishments that come with different sites. Seeing everything being built from scratch and feeling proud of the work I put on once the site is completed.

You were part of one of our first projects in Richmond, what was that experience like for you?

It was a great experience. I was able to meet the inspector for the county we were working in and with his help I became very familiar with their rules and inspection guidelines. I was lucky to have had a great building inspector that was very easy to work with.

What is your favorite thing about working at Chesapeake?

I joined Chesapeake a year ago now, and everyone was very welcoming. I feel Blessed to have joined the company. The company has a strong teamwork culture and really emphasizes the growth of everyone. A Perfect example was my first job in Richmond that I did with Chesapeake, I had such great a team to work with and learn so much from everyone in different areas.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

Well, when I am not at work I enjoy spending time with my family. I always look forward to our family vacation and adventures we do together. I like going fishing with my kids and taking them to their travel sporting events, I watch football and grill here and there as well.
