Meet Nathan Delabar - Superintendent and this month's Hard Hat Hang Up.

How did you get into the construction industry?

My story on how I got into construction starts out pretty typical.  As a kid I enjoyed building and construction, from Legos, to models Lincoln logs.  Growing up on a farm We had plenty of opportunity to be outside and hands on.  When we needed something done, we did it ourselves like placing concrete building equipment shed to adding on to barns.  Graduating high school I didn’t know how to get from where I was to what I wanted to be.  I started off going to college for architecture then changed to construction management until I finally dropped out.  I started back at a different school, and the first instructor I had was a senior project manager working on the new Nationwide Area in Columbus Ohio.  From that point, I knew this was going to be my career path.

What do you like most about being a Superintendent?

My favorite part about being a superintendent is working through issues.  Ideally it is finding those traps ahead of time and preventing them from happening, but some of the most satisfying moments come from the most adverse situations.

What has been your favorite project you have worked on?

There have been several projects over my career that I have enjoyed.  Bavaro Hall at the UVA stands out.  It was a project earlier in my career, when I was working for a masonry contractor.  The building was designed to look like the original buildings of the university and positioned to cover up some building that were built in the mid 90’.  The detail on that building is something that I am proud to help coordinate, manage and ensure quality on.

What is your favorite thing about working at Chesapeake?

My favorite thing about working at Chesapeake is the respect that is shown, not just to me but to all the employees.  It is definitely a place where I feel appreciated.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?

If I am not at work, you will typically find me with my kids.  Both kids play on multiple soccer teams and different leagues.  I enjoy camping with them, taking them to the beach, taking my son to his races and being an active part of their lives as they grow up.
