It's Day 5 of Women in Construction Week, where we're spotlighting the women of CCG who are paving the way and advancing our industry! Today we highlight Kim Campbell, CCG’s Senior Director of Human Resources. Coming from the technology industry, Kim joined CCG and became fascinated by the level of teamwork, collaboration and skill required to build commercial projects. Kim’s priorities include developing strategies to attract and retain top talent and working with the entire organization to shape and reinforce our company culture. Kim is also a member of our Safety Committee and recalls her first visit on site as “an amazing experience witnessing firsthand the camaraderie that exists amongst the team. Being onsite also highlighted the importance of implementing a rigorous safety protocol to ensure the health and wellbeing of the team.” Kim’s advice to young women interested in joining the industry is to “reach out to other women who are already working in the industry and learn about our career journey.” After that, she guarantees that you will learn and develop new skills!
1. What led you to choose construction as your career path?
Construction actually chose me. A colleague told me about the opportunity at CCG and I wanted to learn more. As I met with the team, I became fascinated by the level of teamwork, collaboration and skill required to build commercial projects.
2. Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by trailblazers like Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris as they are driven and determined to reach their full potential while recognizing that they serve as role models for many. These women are change agents and that’s what I strive to be both personally and professionally.
3. What do you like most about being the Senior Director of Human Resources within the construction industry?
Developing strategies to attract and retain talent, which allows me to work closely with our employees, understand what motivates them and help create a culture where they can thrive. I’m very excited about educating students at the K-12 level about the amazing opportunities that exist within the industry.
4. What advice would you give a young woman who's considering entering into construction?
Reach out to other women who are already working in the industry and learn about our career journey. That’s the best way to gain insight and get a realistic preview of the opportunities that exist. Once you’ve done that, give it a try – I guarantee you will learn and develop new skills.
5. What is your most memorable moment working in construction?
isiting my first large construction site – it was amazing to experience firsthand the camaraderie that exists amongst the team. Being onsite also highlighted the importance of implementing a rigorous safety protocol to ensure the health and wellbeing of the team.
6. What is your favorite or most challenging project you have worked on or been a part of?
One of my favorite and most challenging projects was leading the implementation of our new HR Software. It was a highly visible project that impacted the entire organization and resulted in immediate benefits of greater efficiency for the HR team and easy access to information for our staff.
7. What traits does a person need to be successful in the construction industry?
Relationship building and problem-solving skills along with a strong work ethic. I would also mention a strong desire to learn, grow and evolve.
